Liposuction

Liposuction

Fat tissue that disrupts the aesthetics of the body contour can cause one to be overly conscious with themselves, and lack confidence to wear what they want or get intimate with their partner or prospective partners. This excess fat can present itself anywhere on the body but is most commonly seen around the waist, thighs, upper arms and flanks.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes the fat via suction, hence the name (lipo means fat). It is one of the most popular (2nd most; after breast augmentation) cosmetic surgical operations. Contour irregularities due to excess fat can be removed while sculpting the body making use of the fat itself. After a liposuction, one can become more confident and happy with themselves.

Techniques

Suction-Assisted Liposuction (SAL)

Suction-assisted liposuction is the traditional liposuction that uses cannulas to suction the fat. It can be done manually with a syringe or it can be automated. Manual suction is preferred on areas that are delicate and with a small amount of fat presence.

Power-assisted Liposuction (PAL)

Power assisted liposuction is similar to SAL technique but differs in that a small motor moves the cannula back and forth to make the process more efficient.

Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction (UAL)

In this technique, ultrasound cannula is used to breakdown the fat cells which can be then suctioned with standard cannulas, to increase the efficiency and ease the surgeon’s fatigue.

Laser-assisted Liposuction (LAL)

Laser-equipped cannula is used to breakdown the fat cells which can be suctioned via standard cannulas, similarly to UAL technique.

Procedures

Depending on the reason and the goal of the surgery, after the incision is made, one or multiple of the following procedures can be done

At first, during consultation, necessary discussions are made. Patients can ask their questions, voice their desires and complaints, and the surgeon will put their professional opinion on the matter. Preoperative photographs will be taken, and surgical planning will be made.

Surgical markings will point to the areas with excess fat tissue to be targeted. After anesthesia, which can be either local or general depending on the operation and preferences, is administered the patient will be prepared for the liposuction process, wetting solution and sterilization will be made and then liposuction will begin.

There are few different techniques for liposuction but in general small entry sites are cut, just wide enough for the cannula to enter, fat tissue on the target areas are sucked.

Suction is done at a rather superficial layer, there is no contact with internal organs, so do not worry it’s not dangerous. Although if it is too superficial, there can be skin dimpling which can lead to irregularities.

Possible Complications

Complications and the frequency with which they occur may vary depending on the technique used.

Contour deformities

These deformities include asymmetry, and skin dimpling.

Seroma

Translucent fluid collection forming around the incision areas are called seromas and they are usually not painful and can be drained.

Temporary weight gain

Edema can occur after the surgery as the body is healing, which can cause you to gain weight. But this weight is not fat and therefore will go away after the recovery is complete.

Paresthesia

Tingling sensation (paresthesia) is a temporary side effect and will resolve with time.

Infection

Infection is very easy to prevent, you just need to keep the surgical sites clean by periodically cleaning the area.

Fat and pulmonary embolism

Important and possibly dangerous complication is embolism, in which a vein is blocked with either fat (in fat embolism) or with blood clot, preventing blood from passing through. In extreme cases, it can be even fatal. To prevent it, you should follow your doctor’s orders, and take your medications.
